Nobunaga and the Sengoku Era

Oda Nobunaga (1534–1582) was one of Japan’s most influential warlords. His slogan “Tenka Fubu” — “Rule the realm by force” — symbolized his bold plan to unify a fractured land. Beyond warfare, he embraced firearms, promoted free markets (Rakuichi Rakuza), and reshaped culture and politics.

Nobunaga’s portraits and imagery from the Battle of Okehazama help introduce his character and era.

Azuchi Castle — A Lost Masterpiece

Built in 1576 on a lakeside hill, Azuchi Castle fused Japanese elegance with bold innovation. Accounts describe golden décor, a unique multi-story silhouette, and a castle-town shaped for politics and commerce. After Nobunaga’s death in 1582, the castle burned, but the foundations and the climb up Otemichi still tell the story.

The Festival and Local Pride

Every November, the streets around Azuchi come alive with banners, armor, and drums. Residents portray samurai and princesses, turning a community tradition into living history. It’s an intimate festival where visitors can feel close to the story — not just watch it.

Walking Through History

Arrive in the morning for the parade, then take the Otemichi path up to the castle ruins. From the hilltop, panoramic views of Lake Biwa open wide — the same horizon Nobunaga once commanded. In autumn, golden light and crisp air make for unforgettable photos.

Toru Tour private car: Hotel pickup in Kyoto, Osaka, or Shiga takes you directly to the site with flexible timing and optional stops (Omihachiman canal, Hikone Castle, Biwa viewpoints).
